Fascinated by some of the wilder creations of Charm City Cakes and BCakeNY, i always wanted to make an edible “theme cake” on my own. Just in time for Tobin’s birthday, i came across the perfect inspiration on the blog of a Vancouver based cupcake business, Coco Cake: Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar, turned into a cupcake party train! (It’s still one of Tobin’s favorite books).

The things i’ve learned: it’s as much fun as i have suspected, a lot more work than i had thought, and … i really don’t care about buttercream. Next year, it will be all about the inner values of the cake again ;-)

Sooki: when it comes to the eating part, i would trade these cupcakes for a good strawberry shortcake any time. I used to make a big one every year for Mika, and it was always gone in the blink of an eye. If only one could build with whipped cream as well as with buttercream frosting and fondant…

Hyewon: don’t be silly. You’re a great mama and a great artist with much more profound outlets for your creativity. Can’t wait for your next book!

Jeeun – do you know that my favorite strawberry shortcake recipe is still the one YOU made for Sooki once? Sabine and i were your line cooks, remember? I’ve used your recipe ever since…

Amazing! Mika and Tobin are so lucky to have such a arty mommy. You could open a bakery just for this caterpillar cake and the strawberry shortcake (would love to taste it some day).
