Swedish Midsummer Celebration
June 20th, 2008 by ninja
A big shout-out goes to Sooki and Johan at the eve of Swedish Midsummer Celebration! They can now participate in the real thing, but over here the next best thing to a ticket to Sweden is a subway ride to Battery Park. The smörgåsbord was jättegott, the music and flower reefs beautifully authentic, and the weather held up just long enough for a perfect summer evening. Even Tobin partied all the way, trying to eat every reef within reach.

Of course we had to keep the tradition alive! You were greatly missed, but thanks to your expert instructions last year, i whipped up the flower reefs in no time. Mika and i even joined the dancing folks around the maypole. We did the froggy dance and the rocket. Then there was a silly roundabout dance where they asked all ‘small children’ to be seated right at the bottom of the maypole and we watched all of NYC’s crazy Swedes swirl around us 3 layers deep. Unfortunately, i didn’t have my camera for that dance, but grabbed it right after … there’s a short clip of “the rocket” and some other chant at the end of the dance.

Glad to hear you got to take part in the maypole dance.. i don’t think we even went near the maypole last year, right? The pictures are lovely! The flower reefs make a big difference too i think..no one gave them out on Marstrand :(

Maybe real Swedes are supposed to rob their own gardens or a meadow nearby? Manhattanites are at the mercy of one individual though: when they announced the sponsors (H&M, IKEA and the likes), they mentioned special thanks for the flower reefs to some private donor, who seems to be preparing all the little bouquets and wire packets etc.
