Four Generations 2010

August 8th, 2010 by ninja

When i was a little girl, we had a direct line of four generations of women in my family until i was in my mid-twenties. To document this unusual fact, we took a ‘Four Generations Portrait’ almost every year*. My own great grandmother passed away the year before i moved to New York (at age 96!), but since Mika was born, we could line up again: great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, and daughter. Of course, Tobin is welcome to join in as well and we made sure to document the two guys in attendance on their own.

* Xmas 1968 – the first ever four generation photo, featuring my great-grandmother Hedwig … and Spring 2005 – the first four generation photo with Mika:

We’re simply in the hallway of my grandmothers apartment building. It has a frosted glass front and white walls reflecting the light back on the remaining 3 sides. Almost like studio lighting. Special thanks to my dad though, who kept our attention focused on the camera – not easy with Tobin goofing around right in front of us.
Now that i am back i notice that ALL images posted in Germany are too dark. I had the same problem last year because the laptop screen varies a lot depending on the viewpoint … might have to go back and fix some of the posts before uploading the rest. Ugh.

Amazing. Your mother and grandmother look EXACTLY the same as 40 years ago.

Don’t they? Very lucky genes, plus they have kept the same hairstyle over decades. My mom had longer hair in the 80’s, but went back to the same length she wore in the late 60’s. Now let’s just hope time will be equally forgiving on us…
