My dad sent fantastic pictures from their garden and nearby meadows, so that the kids can experience Winter in Hamburg remotely. Mika’s comment when she saw the German titmouse blue tit (Blaumeise)? “He has a helmet like a Star Wars Storm Trooper!” My dad’s reply? “Good thing he wasn’t armed!”

I just looked up Meise, the German term for these kinds of birds, and the translation offered “titmouse”. Great tits seem to be what we call Kohlmeise (black & white head), but this bird is a Blaumeise (mostly white with some blue head). Thanks to you, i finally found the proper translation as blue tit.
