Bakery Bugs Grand Opening

June 16th, 2011 by ninja

As a first grader, Mika doesn’t have any graduation ceremony or end-of-year performance, but her teacher came up with a special project that might be even more memorable: the class opened a pop-up restaurant/cafe! They researched by interviewing local businesses about their daily work, then channeled their findings into creating “Bakery Bugs”. The classroom got transformed entirely: a host stand up front to manage the crowd (with cheat sheets for the little hosts), tables set with custom place mats and hand-written menus, hand-painted wall decorations, a waiting area with their own “bug books”, and a cashier counter. With the help of some mom volunteers, the kids baked for two days straight – small batches in the classroom via toaster oven, and the rest finished off at home. The final menu included: banana bread, chocolate chip cookies, scones with butter and jam, mini blueberry muffins, fresh fruit salad, orange juice, hot- and iced coffee. No wonder the restaurant received a solid A rating! Even though all items were priced competitively at 50¢ to $1.00 each, they sold $173.00 worth of tasty merchandise in their first – and only – hour of business. The class voted to donate all of their proceeds to their “charity” of choice: the school’s PTA.

Mika lucked out with her teacher, who was able to cover the regular curriculum slightly ahead of time to be able to fit this into her class’ school year. Only two out of six 1st-grade classes opened a restaurant … the other teachers ran out of time. Bonus points: she’s 5+ months pregnant with her first child. Superwoman :)
