Laternelaufen 2011

Tonight, we met up with hundreds of (half) Germans in Prospect Park for the annual St. Martin lantern parade/walk. Some of our big kid allies from 2010 and 2009 were missing today, but we joined forces with Team Bruno. After the event, we had dinner together and the kids did a great job entertaining each other. We only played the iPhone card well after their regular bedtime, but it made for an extra cuddly photo opp ;-)

Yes, the kids made them with a little assembly help from me. We bought a “lantern kit” this Summer in Germany, which consists of top- and bottom round cardboard pieces, wooden handle sticks, the necessary metal hardware pieces, and lots of different colored cardboard, vellum, and tissue paper. You can do whatever design you want with the materials. They drew with markers, and told me where to cut out shapes etc. So far, i am not letting them touch Exacto knifes!
