Freewheelin’

On my birthday, two milestones happened: Mika lost another, particularly stubborn tooth, and Tobin learned how to ride his bike. For good. Totally made my day!

Impressive Tobin!!!!! :) p.s. We took Lukas’ threewheeler outside today! But his legs are still a bit too short so after like a minute i pretty much pulled him around it…

Sooki, we had the exact same experience with our tricycle. Mika only liked “riding it” when i put the push bar in the back and wheeled her around. It was a pain, since she didn’t really help with the steering. Every time we wanted to change direction, i had to pop a wheelie :-P

Fyi, in our experience, training wheels do little to nothing towards riding a bike. Mika was riding her 12″ with training wheels for a year without getting any closer to actual riding. Only when i took the pedals off for a week and had her use it as a balance bike, she found her center of gravity. After that, she could ride (using pedals) without further instructions.

Learning from that experience, i started Tobin on a runbike first, for overall balance. When i got the used 12″ blue bike, he just needed a few weeks of learning how to pedal … and then it all came together in his head easily.

Tobin was always rather uncoordinated compared to Mika, but nonetheless, he has started riding his bike about half a year earlier than she did.

(Do the twins – or any other friends – have runbikes they might outgrow in time for Lukas to take over?)

Ninjette, you know it’s funny you write about the run bike. We actually looked into getting one for him first. But the one we liked, the price was too expensive..and then we found one second hand then it got sold right before us..
    it’s this…

and so we just decided to get a three wheeler instead because the twins had it and Lukas showed interest.
hmm..perhaps we should pursue again and get him a runbike…

The wooden runbikes are fine, but all of them have no brakes. I remember plenty of steep hills in your neighborhood…

Maybe we should find a way to get Tobin’s runbike to you? http://minitosu.com/?p=6696
It’s an aluminum frame (lighter than the wooden bikes), 12″ air tires, has one of the lowest seat positions (good for starters, and adjustable), a HAND BRAKE, and looks like new. Tobin loved it.

Of you want to read more details, here’s the site: http://kinderbikeusa.com/main/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=83&Itemid=54 The color looks actually nicer in real life than online … it’s a slightly pearly, light “grass green”

    Let me know –

Oh Ninjette, you are always so willing to give us stuff :P We would love it of course but i think it will be a big hassle + expensive to send no? How much do you think it will cost to post? Perhaps if isn’t that much and good to send, we can pay for post costs?
