Budding Botanist

June 18th, 2012 by ninja

On our last visit to the office supply store, Tobin begged me to get him some popsicle sticks from the craft section. Tonight, right before bedtime, he revealed his latest project: labeling all plants on our little balcony. In the opener, you can see moss and climbing vine in the foreground. First row: strawberries, moss (closeup), morning glory, mint. Second row: basil, flowers #1, #2, and #3. (Apologies to team Song-Dusoir for the lack of knowledge … maybe they can help identify the last pictures? Is #3 some sort of carnation?)

Nice labels, so creative. No.3 is what we call Sweet William, Dianthus barbatus. Carnation is Dianthus caryophyllus, so yes related! will ask R to identify the others….

I knew i could count on you, Jeeun! Thank you!!
Mystery flower #2 is probably too hard to specify, as the petals in this picture are all dried up and wilted. I will pass on “Sweet William” to Tobin though … that’s a memorable name! Perhaps you know the identity of the falsely dubbed “moss” (2nd thumbnail)? It has tiny white flowers, which seem to float an inch above the green fuzzy leaves. Sung bought it because Luna likes to sit in that planter, and he thought it would be like a pillowy patch of grass – but she only liked the bare dirt ;-)

Number one, rory has a vague idea that it looks like an agastache…but not sure. number two, mystery! Can’t tell from pix. And the moss, well all we can say is that we are pretty sure it’s not, as you seem to know. Tricksy!!
