Ellis Island (& Lady Liberty)

July 1st, 2012 by ninja

On our first weekend of Summer Break, we followed up on Mika’s latest social studies subject, Ellis Island. First stop of the tour: Liberty Island. Unfortunately, the statue is undergoing a temporary renovation until the end of 2012, so we couldn’t walk up into the crown. Paired with relentless heat, it wasn’t the kids’ favorite part of the excursion, as you can see. Two lemon slushies restored their mood quickly, with mutant yellow tongues to prove. Next up was Ellis Island. The immigration museum tour was a breeze: air conditioned, with fascinating topics, and a special audio commentary for kids.

Thanks, Sooki … i finally found a ‘panama hat’ i really like: very thin, soft (real) straw. Hope it ages well and doesn’t rip, as the material is quite delicate.

Regarding the temps: you actually MISS the MUGGY heat??? Girl, you need to visit asap to get your NYC fix … although perhaps during the more beautiful months (May/Sep)? After 15+ years, I am still struggling with the humidity, but i do appreciate the fact that come July one doesn’t need sweater at night anymore. If only we were going out at night more often … ;-)
